You can plan a romantic retreat or just car camp in for a night in the driveway to get a little space from the kids. We’ve got tips to make the most out of your weekend with tasty camping recipes, ways to add awesome ambiance to your tent, a few fun apps to download, and more.

The first item you’ll want to tackle on your romantic Roofnest getaway to-do list is to add a few upgrades to make your roof top tent even cozier to set the mood.

Add Easy-to-Install Insulation

You and your partner will love having a warm, cozy retreat waiting for you after a long day adventuring out in the snow. Even if you’re driveway car camping, you’ll want to stay cozy if the temperatures drop.

Try out our Ptarmigan tent insulation for the Eagle, Sparrow, and Sparrow XL. It’s lightweight, easy to pack, and even easier to install!

Simply line up the 4 vertical zippers with the 4 corners of the tent, attach the hooks to the upper edge of the shell and you’re all set!

Now that your roof top tent is prepped for any weather, you can focus on adding some flair to make the night extra special — starting with lighting.

Add Soft Lighting

There’s no such thing as romantic ambiance without mood lighting. Just a string of lights and a few other minor touches can turn a roof top tent into a quaint outdoor escape.

Grab a few strings of battery-powered LEDs to fit around the top edges of your roof top tent, lining the “roof.”

If stargazing gets too cold outside, bring the stars to you with a remote controlled galaxy light. It comes with Bluetooth capabilities, so you can connect it to a special Valentine’s Day playlist, and the lighting will adjust to the sounds of each song.

There’s nothing like calming lights and romantic music to set the Valentine’s Day mood.

Choose the Coziest Gear

It’s amazing what some warm blankets, soft sheets, and a few extra pillows can do to turn a regular camp trip into a romantic camping trip.

Level up your Roofnest sleeping mat by adding some comfort items like fleece plush sheets and a heated throw with plenty of room for both of you.

Or you can opt for a Roofnest down blanket to wrap around your shoulders while stargazing and sipping hot drinks around the fire.

If you really want to go all out, try out a few lavender infused memory foam pillows for better neck support and deeper, more restful sleep.

Try Out a Romantic New Camping Spot

One of the perks of being a camping lover is the huge community of fellow camping fans. Every day, couples like you find exciting and romantic places to venture together (and then share those adventures on social media!)

Here are a few romantic camping trip locations other nature lovers have recommended:

Ouray, Colorado

Ouray, Colorado has been dubbed “The Switzerland of America” thanks to its stunning scenery, laid-back culture, and endless outdoor activities suited for any season.

Set up camp at the Ouray RV Park and campgrounds. Ask if there’s space for riverside guests so you can enjoy a river walk that leads to hot tubs, delicious food, and more.

Once you’re settled in, pick out some adventures to share together. Ouray has a little bit of something for everyone — share some childhood nostalgia with sledding, or try something new like climbing a wall of ice.

And if your muscles get a little sore from your adventures, there’s a variety of natural hot springs with stunning views of the mountains for you to unwind in.

The Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train

Durango, Colorado is known for its diverse scenery including expansive plains, breathtaking mountainscapes, and the San Juan Forest.

Needless to say, there are plenty of wonderful places in the area to park your car for a romantic camping trip.

Once you’ve picked a spot, head over to board the train that goes from Durango to another beautiful town called Silverton via the Silverton Railroad.

The train runs through picturesque landscapes along the Animas River, and ends at the Neeedlton Stop, the perfect spot to hop out and explore the wilderness!

Coral Pink Sand Dunes

Not only are the Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Southwest Colorado open during the winter, but it’s also one of the best times of the year to go!

Winter weather allows for the pools and “rivers” that form only once a year along the dunes, making the expansive scenery even more beautiful and other-worldly.

Camp near the dunes to enjoy sandboarding and hiking by day, then pop over to nearby Mt. Princeton hot springs for a long, relaxing dip in the pools of your choice.

Plan Relaxing Campfire Activities

Skip the stress of activity hopping and bring all the magic right to your campfire with these fun games and activities.

Outdoor Movie Night

If you’re like us, you’ve been missing the ability to pop out for a spontaneous movie night. Plan a movie night under the stars in your own backyard to make up for it!

Pick out a portable mini projector that’s lightweight and easy to pack, and that will link to any devices that you stream movies from. Grab an easy-to-transport screen that’s outdoor-friendly to project the movie onto. Then kick back, snuggle close, and enjoy!

Warming Cocktails

Enhance the evening with some campfire cocktails to keep you warm.

Camping stoves work just fine to boil water for these. But if you don’t have one, campfires work great, too.

To set up your campfire for warm cocktails, surround your fire pit with large rocks that provide a stable surface for your pot and cooking gear. Once you’re started your fire, lay a baking rack over the pit. You can heat the contents of your cocktail in a small saucepan over the baking rack.

Try this campfire hot toddy on for size.

For each drink, you’ll need:

  • Shot glass
  • 2 mugs
  • Stirring spoon
  • Small saucepan
  • 5 oz Don Papa aged rum
  • 2 oz spiced apple cider
  • 1/2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1/4 oz cinnamon clove syrup
  • 1/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1/4 oz pineapple juice

How to Make It:

  1. Simmer cinnamon clove syrup (mix 3 cinnamon sticks, 2 teaspoons of clove, and a bit of water)
  2. Remove, then add 3 cups of Demerara sugar to complete the syrup
  3. Heat syrup with lemon juice, pineapple juice, apple cider, and cinnamon until it’s hot but not boiling
  4. Pour mixture into mugs and add alcohol
  5. Garnish with apples and cinnamon, and enjoy!

One More Important Thing to Prepare: A Romantic Dinner

While snuggling closer under the stars might seem close to perfect, there’s one important thing missing: a romantic camping dinner.

Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten this important piece! We just know that when it comes to Valentine’s Day dinner, you’ll want to choose whatever best fits your partner’s tastes.
