ASA/ABS-Fiberglass Shell

The Sparrow Adventure features an ASA/ABS outer shell reinforced with fiberglass molded into an aerodynamic design that decreases road noise and improves gas mileage. The inside of the shell is coated with an insulation layer and attractive quilted fabric to insulate, reduce noise, and give the inside a softer feel. The lower shell is made with the same materials, with a special shape to increase rigidity and stability. Each Roofnest is rated to support up to 650 lbs.

Wall Material

The wall material is a polyurethane-coated polyester and cotton blend with a waterproof rating of 3000mm (for comparison a typical waterproof rating on a backpacking tent is 1000mm). The fabric is much thicker and tougher than a typical backpacking tent — it’s more like a heavy-duty wall tent. The material provides additional warmth, and is much quieter during a wind storm due to its weight.

Doors and Windows

The Sparrow Adventure and Sparrow Adventure XL have 3 doors: one on either side of the tent, and one on the rear. Both tents have a window on the front of the tent. Every door and window have a bug mesh and canvas cover, and you can unzip both for entry or exit from any side of the tent.

Ladder

All Roofnests are shipped with a sturdy and lightweight 8.5′ telescoping ladder for easy access in and out of your tent. The ladder collapses and comes with its own heavy-duty storage bag. The ladder can be attached to the edge of the Roofnest for additional safety if desired.

Built-in Mattress

Every Roofnest comes with a built-in, custom-shaped 7cm foam mattress. This isn’t your typical camping mattress. It’s so comfortable, it feels like a real bed. Say goodbye to a poor night’s sleep while camping, and say hello to getting in a good snooze with a Roofnest RTT.

The unboxing and installation

I picked up my new roofnest sparrow yesterday afternoon at the loading dock and unboxed it right there and installed it on the roof of my Subaru Legacy Outback. The shipping container arrived without any damage at all. I was slightly shocked. Upon uncrating the sparrow I was very impressed with the quality if finished on the tent. All parts and accessories were accounted for. My niece and I installed it on my car and were on the road in under an hour start to finish. After getting back home I set up the tent and omg so simple and fast 😍 The mattress is very comfortable. I left it set up overnight to help air it out and get rid of the new tent smell. The team at roofnest were extremely helpful and knowledgeable in answering all my questions prior to the purchase. I will be posting a new review after I use it this weekend. All in all I am 100% satisfied with my purchase and stoked to get out in the backcountry and start using it 😍

Sparrow Rocks

I’m a year into the ownership of the sparrow. I took a three week tour of national parks this past summer and it preformed great. I put it on a Subaru Outback. I also use it on my f150 as a base camp when I fly fish. It’s very comfortable and quick to open or close. Made camping so much easier.

First trip with the Roofnest Sparrow XL

My wife and I, both 71 years old, just completed our first trip with our new Sparrow XL mounted atop our Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. We love the tent! The Sparrow XL is well-constructed, easy to set up and take down, very comfortable for sleeping in temperatures from 30 to 50 degrees at night, and very quiet on the road even at freeway speeds. (BTW: The Roofnest down quilt is terrific in cooler temperatures -- b it is both light weight and toasty. We traveled almost 4000 miles through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana, staying in state parks. We experienced no problems of any kind with our Roofnest. We even took it through carwashes to get the bugs off. No sweat! We slept in 40-45 mph wind gusts in Wyoming and the Sparrow was as solid as a rock. Our only addition was a set of cable-reinforced, locking security straps to provide extra piece of mind as we drove down the road -- as well as to deter possible theft. This slowed down the setup and take-down process by several minutes, but it was worthwhile to us. Everywhere we went, the Roofnest attracted a lot of attention and interest. Several well-experienced campers said wit was the coolest thing they had ever seen. And we think everyone was amazed to see two old geezers climbing in and out of the Roofnest. We are very happy with the Sparrow XL and are already planning our next trip. Thanks for everything!

Our Sparrow XL just arrived!

Our Sparrow XL just arrived on schedule in in excellent shape. It is now mounted securely on our 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid -- it looks great and rides perfectly. My wife and I (both in our 70's) are planning our "shakedown camp out" and we are eager to use our new Roofnest. P.S. The neighbor kids are just as excited as we are.

3 month trip

After a month long trial trip to Idaho in 2018 I took a 3 month trip to the Yukon and NorthWest Territories with my Sparrow Roofnest mounted on my 2007 Subaru Forester in 2019. The Sparrow was my sanctuary and never let me down whether I was at a Pilot Truck Stop or in the boonies in the Yukon. I set it up and took it down in pouring rain (British Columbia is green after all) as well as had strong winds in Tuktoyaktuk on the Beaufort Sea. If it had rained I would run over the outside of the tent with an absorbant towel to prevent any excess moisture for getting trapped before driving away I also learned to first pull the back of the tent down to get the moisture of the roof before tackling the front and get all the rain water from the top down my sleeves. Ventilation was of course excellent with the large openings on all 4 sides. I had plenty of light to read by and found the Sparrow spacious with room for my Kindle and such without worrying that I might roll on top of the gadgets. A waterproof shoe bag was a life saver to take my muddy shoes inside and not worry about getting my bed dirty. If you are wondering about getting one of these, do it, you will not regret it. Be prepared to answer lots of questions from other travelers. I did not notice a drop in MPG. My Subie clocked 11,500+ miles on the trip to Canada. I hope this Coronavirus thing will be over soon ( 2121?) because my Forester can not wait to step out again with it's Roofnest on top. The Roofnest was nicknamed 'Lunchbox' by my neighbor . It took a few months to figure out it was a "lunchbox" for grizzlies with me as a snack inside. Saw many black bears and grizzlies but they left my Nest alone.

Love my sparrow after 4 years

Bought my sparrow several years ago. From week long stays in the Tetons to weekend dashes to the Dunes in Southern Colorado, our Roofnest makes camping efficient, convenient, and comfortable. The whole organization has been extremely supportive and helpful throughout the years. If I wasn’t still so happy with my original sparrow, I’d be looking at a new one. Worth every penny.

Easy to set up, fun to use.

Installation was straightforward and not hard. The tent is made with visibly high quality materials and the tent is sturdy and solid. I’m 6’ tall and so is my friend. We both fit comfortably inside with room for snacks and gear. I can’t wait to elevate (literally) my camping experiences this summer.

Stop looking, this is the RTT for you!

You truly get what you pay for. The price on RTTs is hard to swallow. We shopped around and looked at cheaper tents, but kept coming back to Roofnest. They truly stand behind their product, and after owning one, we do too. We always hear other RTT owners complain about condensation issues or not staying warm. Our only complaint is we usually oversleep when camping because it’s so cozy inside.
